Broken & Burst Pipe Repair

A burst half-inch pipe can release hundreds of gallons an hour. Shut off the water, then call. We stop the leak, repair the line and help you check for hidden damage — especially after a freeze, when one break often means others.

At your location in 60 minutes or you save $60.

The short answer

Close the main shut-off right away — in most houses it’s near the meter where the water line comes in, often in the basement or a utility room. In an apartment without its own main, close the fixture valves and get your super to shut the riser. Turn off power to any wet area, then call us: we stop the leak, cut out the damaged section and replace it properly, and check for more breaks after a freeze.

Is this an emergency?

Call now if…

  • Any pipe is spraying or pouring water
  • Water is coming through a ceiling
  • Pipes froze and you have no water — a burst may follow when they thaw

Do this right now

  1. Close the main shut-off immediately — usually where the water line enters the building.
  2. Turn off electricity to wet areas at the breaker.
  3. Open a cold tap on the lowest floor to drain the system.
  4. Frozen pipe? Don’t use an open flame to thaw it.

Signs you need us

  • Water spraying or pouring from a pipe
  • Bulging, stained or wet ceiling or wall
  • No water flow after a hard freeze
  • Sudden pressure drop and the sound of running water
  • Frost on an exposed pipe, or a pipe that looks swollen
  • A water meter that keeps turning with every tap off
  • Puddles with no obvious source
  • Hissing inside a wall or ceiling

  3. 03

    Repair the line

Cut out the damaged section and replace it properly — not a hose clamp.

Burst pipes in apartments and houses

Most bursts happen in winter, in pipes that run along outside walls, through unheated basements, crawlspaces and garages, or past drafty windows. Water expands as it freezes and the pressure splits the pipe — but the leak often doesn’t show until the ice thaws, which is why a pipe can let go hours after a cold snap ends. Detached houses with crawlspaces and older homes with little insulation are the most at risk, and so is any space left cold — a vacant apartment, or a shop or office closed over a long weekend, where a burst can run for days before anyone notices.

In apartment buildings, water from a burst runs down through the floors, so the people below often see it first. If you rent, call your super or building manager as well as us — many apartments have no main of their own, and the risers that feed a stack of apartments are shut off by building staff. In a house, learn where the main is before a freeze: it’s usually near the water meter, where the line comes into the house. Outdoor spigots that weren’t shut off and drained before winter can split inside the wall, and the leak often isn’t found until someone turns on the hose in spring.

Upfront price, every time

What burst pipe repair costs

The repair depends on where the pipe broke and how hard it is to reach. A split pipe under a sink or in an open basement is a quick fix. A burst inside a finished wall or ceiling means opening it up, and after a freeze there’s sometimes more than one break.

You get the price before the repair starts. Damage to floors, walls and ceilings is separate from the plumbing repair — we document it with photos for your insurer.

Honest advice

Repair the break, or replace the pipe?

If a sound pipe burst because it froze or was hit, replacing the damaged section restores it fully — there’s no need to touch the rest.

If it burst because the pipe is corroded — old galvanized steel or pitted copper — the rest of that run is likely close behind. We show you the condition of the piece we cut out and tell you honestly whether more of it should be replaced.

Mistakes that make it worse

  • Not knowing where the main shut-off is until water is pouring — find it now
  • Thawing a frozen pipe with a torch or open flame — it’s a fire risk and can crack the pipe
  • Turning the water back on before checking the run for other cracks
  • Wrapping a split with tape or a hose clamp and calling it fixed

Keep it from happening again

  • Keep the heat at 55°F or higher, even when you’re away
  • Open cabinet doors under sinks on outside walls on bitter nights
  • Let a faucet drip on the coldest nights so the water keeps moving
  • Insulate pipes in crawlspaces, garages and unheated basements, and shut off and drain outdoor spigots before winter

FAQ

Broken & Burst Pipe Repair questions

What should I do first when a pipe bursts?

Close the main shut-off, turn off power to wet areas at the breaker, and move valuables out of the way. Then call — if you can’t find the shut-off, we’ll help you find it over the phone.

Where is my main shut-off valve?

Usually near the meter, where the water line comes into the building — often in the basement, a crawlspace, a garage or a utility room. In apartments, check under sinks and behind access panels; many apartments have no main of their own, and building staff shut the riser.

My pipes are frozen but haven’t burst. What should I do?

Open the faucet the pipe feeds so water can flow as it thaws, and warm the pipe gently with a hair dryer or warm towels — never an open flame. If you can’t reach it or it’s inside a wall, call us before it splits.

Will my insurance cover a burst pipe?

Sudden bursts are often covered, but every policy is different. We give you photos, the failed piece of pipe if you want it, and a written description of the cause to support your claim.

How do I stop pipes freezing?

Keep heat at 55°F or above, open cabinets on outside walls, let a tap drip on bitter nights, and insulate pipes in crawlspaces and garages.
