Clogged Toilet & Toilet Repair

An overflowing toilet is the definition of an emergency. If the plunger hasn’t worked, stop flushing — we’ll clear it properly and find out whether the toilet or the line behind it is the real problem.

At your location in 60 minutes or you save $60.

The short answer

If the toilet is about to overflow, lift the tank lid and push the flapper down to stop more water, then turn the valve behind the toilet clockwise to shut it off. Don’t flush again. If a flange plunger with a good seal doesn’t clear it, call us — we clear it with a closet auger and check whether the real blockage is further down the line.

Is this an emergency?

Call now if…

  • The toilet is overflowing or about to
  • It’s the only toilet in the home or business
  • Flushing pushes water up another drain

Can usually wait for a scheduled visit

  • A slow-flushing toilet that still clears
  • A running toilet with the supply valve turned off

Not sure? Call anyway — we’ll tell you honestly.

Do this right now

  1. Lift the tank lid and push the flapper down to stop more water.
  2. Turn the valve behind the toilet clockwise to shut off the supply.
  3. Don’t flush again — every flush adds water.

Signs you need us

  • Water rising toward the rim when you flush
  • Toilet clogs again days after plunging
  • Water appears in the tub or shower when you flush
  • Gurgling from the toilet when a sink or tub drains
  • Weak or incomplete flushes
  • Toilet runs non-stop or refills on its own
  • Toilet rocks, or water seeps around the base
  • Sewer smell in the bathroom

How we handle the call

  1. 01

    Stop the water

Supply shut off and the bowl under control before anything else.

  2. 02

    Clear the clog

Closet auger first — it reaches past the trap without scratching the bowl.

  3. 03

    Check the line

If the blockage is past the toilet, we clear the branch or main it drains into.

  4. 04

    Fix the cause

Worn flappers, fill valves, wax rings and loose toilets repaired the same visit.

  5. 05

    Replace if it’s done

Cracked, or clogs constantly because of its design? We price a new toilet and can often install it the same day.

Know your building

Toilet clogs in apartment buildings and houses

In an apartment building, your toilet drains into a stack shared with the apartments above and below. A clog in your toilet is your problem; a blockage in the stack can push someone else’s water up through your toilet or tub — and that’s a building problem, so tell your super or building manager as well as us. When a stack blocks near the bottom, the apartments on the lowest floors of that line see it first. In a house, a toilet that backs up into the tub or a basement floor drain points to the main line rather than the toilet itself.

Wipes are the big one. Even wipes sold as “flushable” don’t break down the way toilet paper does, and they’re a major cause of sewer clogs. In older homes and buildings with cast-iron and clay pipe, they snag on the rough pipe walls and build into blockages further down the line. In restaurants, shops and offices, a busy restroom sees paper towels and wipes flushed all day — a clear sign and a covered trash can next to the toilet prevent a lot of calls.

Upfront price, every time

What toilet repair costs

A clog cleared from the bowl with an auger is a short job. It costs more when the blockage is further down the line, when something has to be pulled out of the trap by lifting the toilet, or when a wax ring or flange needs replacing at the same time.

Running toilets are usually just a flapper or fill valve. If a toilet is cracked, or keeps clogging because of how it’s made, we’ll price a replacement — and you get the price before any work starts.

Honest advice

Repair or replace the toilet?

Almost everything inside a tank can be replaced cheaply: flappers, fill valves, flush valves, handles. A toilet that rocks needs a new wax ring and secure bolts, not a new toilet.

Replace it when the bowl or tank is cracked, when an early low-flow model clogs again and again, or when parts for an odd model are no longer made. A modern high-efficiency toilet flushes harder on less water than many of the first low-flow models.

Mistakes that make it worse

  • Flushing again to “see if it clears” — that’s how a clog becomes an overflow
  • Pouring chemical drain cleaner in the bowl — it rarely works on a toilet clog and leaves the water dangerous to touch
  • Forcing a wire hanger through the trap — it scratches the bowl and can push the clog deeper
  • Flushing wipes, paper towels, cotton swabs or cat litter

Keep it from happening again

  • Flush only toilet paper — trash everything else, including “flushable” wipes
  • Keep a flange plunger (the kind with the extra lip) next to every toilet
  • Replace a flapper that lets the toilet run — it’s cheap and saves a lot of water
  • Fix a rocking toilet early, before the seal fails and water rots the floor

FAQ

Clogged Toilet & Toilet Repair questions

Water comes up in my tub when I flush. What does that mean?

The blockage is past the toilet, in the line both fixtures share. Stop flushing and call — plunging harder won’t reach it.

Why does my toilet keep clogging?

Common causes are low-flow toilets with weak flushes, partial blockages further down the line, or things that shouldn’t be flushed (wipes — even “flushable” ones).

Why does my toilet run on its own every few minutes?

Water is slowly leaking from the tank into the bowl, usually past a worn flapper, and the fill valve keeps topping it up. A new flapper usually fixes it.

Something fell in and got flushed. Can you get it out?

Yes. If the auger can’t reach it, we lift the toilet, take it out from underneath and reset the toilet on a new wax ring.

Can you replace the toilet?

Yes. If the toilet is cracked or beyond repair we can replace it, often the same day.
